Veggie of the Month: Brussels Sprouts!

Brussels Sprouts in general always had the bad reputation for the worst flavored and foul smelled vegetable for kids.  When my mom made brussels sprouts for the first time for dinner, I was disgusted.  I don't remember how she made them, but I know I didn't like the taste nor the smell.  I told myself that I will never eat them ever again.

24 years later, I saw packaged brussels sprouts at Trader Joes and decided to buy them.  Ever since I have been with my husband (almost 11 years), I have tried many different things.  Ducks tongue, Tripe (cows stomach lining), 100 year old egg and many other Chinese delicacies.  I have eaten worst things imaginable, so I wanted to give this infamously unloved vegetable another chance.

My husband probably made it just how my mom did years ago for me.  It was steamed and lightly salted. He also cut them in halves, so it will be easier for the kids to eat.  Oh my goodness, how I love thee, let me count thee ways:

1) Antioxidants
2) Rich in Vitamin K
3) May Prevent Cancer
4) Rich in Vitamin C
5) High in Fiber
6) Low in Calories
7) High in Potassium
8) High in PROTEIN

I know as an adult, my taste buds has matured dramatically.  I know this because I ate the brussels sprouts like popcorn.  I just couldn't stop eating them, it was not a pretty sight.  I think it tastes better when its been sitting out for few hours and in room temperature. Why? Because when I actually got the urge to put the leftover dinner away. It was 3 hours after dinner and I kept eating the little suckers like Pringles ("Once you pop, the fun don't stop"). At the end of clean up, there was no brussels sprouts to put away.

I am excited about my rediscovery of brussels sprouts and I think I will stock more of this vegetable more often. My kids who are 6 and 1 ate couple of them and didn't spit them out.  They are not picky in eating vegetables, so I am pretty lucky that they like brussels sprouts too.  I recommend kids dipping them in low fat mayonnaise for extra flavor and calories.

Back Tracking a bit...

Hello Monday! So I made myself wake up at 5:45am this morning to make myself workout.  Even though I only had 4 hours of sleep, I feel fantastic!  I feel so much better thanks to Dayquil and much needed rest, thanks to my wonderful husband.  The last week of P90X I finished, was Week 9.

Because I was sick for 2 weeks straight, I am redoing Week 9 and restarting Phase 3 of P90X Lean.  There are some P90X forums that says to try to keep going even though you are under the weather, but rest if your body needs it.  I chose to workout when I had the energy, which wasn't much...since my lungs were on fire most of the time I was sick.

So today was day 1 of Week 9.  The exercise of the day was, Chest & Back and Ab Ripper X.  I did pretty well, but struggled a bit at the end.  I did the modified version in the last 10 minutes.  I don't want to burn myself out before I even start the week of "catch up".  I know I will feel it tomorrow for sure.  I haven't felt sore in weeks, so I am looking forward to it.  When I feel sore, I know my body is definitely changing.  Pain is Good.

I have a lot to catch up on as in my fitness plan. I especially need to start training for my half marathon that's coming up. It is coming really quick.  I hope I can just finish the race without any shin splints, pinch nerves or cramps of any kind. Oh yeah, I recently purchased my very first compression sleeves.  My reasoning is solely for shin splints.
I bought my PAIR at http://www.amazon.com/Zensah-Compression.  Please read the product information carefully. They are sold in pairs (2 Sleeves per pack) or individually (1 Sleeve per pack).  For more information about what they do for you, click here. I do not want to misinform anyone since I have not personally used the product myself.  I will review about them once I know how I strongly feel about them. Have a great day everyone! xx.

30th Birthday Celebration in Vegas!!

There are so many pictures we as a group took, but "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!" If that wasn't true, boy a lot of people would be in a whole lot of trouble...lol.  No, we were angels. My husband and I opted the very low key itinerary since this was not our first time in the sin city.
We stayed at the Venetian. We just relaxed at the Pai Gow Tables and napped in the Luxury Suite during the day and partied HARD in clubs, limos and party buses at nights.  We ate at the Grand Lux Cafe couple of times. We soothed our hangovers at Noodle Asia on Sunday before we left to the LAS airport.  It was by far the best time I had in Vegas!

Pros and Cons to my trip:

 Pros:

-My first time being in Vegas and I didn't have to share rooms or the gigantic bathroom with anyone but my husband.
-I went to Toby Keiths I love this bar and grill and got on stage and acted the fool with the band.
-Won $575 at the Pai Gow tables!
-I weighed myself to see if I did any damage during my trip, but I lost weight instead!
-Because I bought and wore my Dr. Scholl's Fast Flats...my feet was feeling awesome!

Cons:

-Stuck at the airport for 5 hours
-Because my sparkly F21 shirt was made of metal, I had to get patted down at security in front of everyone.
-I have been sick and still sick since I got back.

I have been sick...

Holy Cow, I have been sick ever since I got back from Las Vegas... I am still sick and I have no appetite for blogging. It hurts to think...lol. I am just been bumming out at home.  I am losing weight, but not the right way I would want to.  I been doing at least 20+ push ups a day...but that's all the energy I am giving out.  I had to call my mom to pick up my daughters on Friday because I was so weak.  I need to rest now...its way late as it is...just wanted to let you know I am here...thanks for those who missed me and messaged me asking where I have been or been up to...lol.  I will post pics when I am feeling better, thank you for your patience.  Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
